PAST OAJE MINI-CONFERENCES

          

      Date Held: Tuesday, October 22nd, 2002

      Location: York Catholic D.S.B. Office, Aurora

      Keynote Speaker: Doug Duff

              

      Keynote Speaker

      • Doug Duff, the Learning Supervisor of Math, Science and Technology from the Thames Valley District School Board, provided a humorous and creative overview of a variety of teaching and learning strategies that could be used to engage the Junior Child in Mathematics.

      • His keynote was divided into three parts, and included three excellent activities dealing with polygons and perimeter, an ingenious game of golf involving translations, and a data management and probability activity that tested the fairness of the game, ‘Rock, Paper and Scissors’.

      • Doug’s enthusiasm for Mathematics was definitely contagious, and the participants received ready-to-use lessons that could be implemented immediately, back in their classrooms.


      Storefront Sessions

      1. Joyce Tonner and Doug Duff, from the Thames Valley DSB, offered additional strategies for developing students’ skills in Mathematics using technology. Participants were shown a variety of ways to develop calculator skills as well as strategies for their use in the Math. program.

      2. Ed Enns, Mathematics consultant for Waterloo Region DSB, focused on problem solving in Math. He provided participants with an overview of the research behind problem solving as well as practical strategies to make problem solving come alive in the classroom.

      3. Gina Micomonaco, from York Catholic DSB, discussed the seven “Strategies for Effective Teaching” and how these apply to providing a stimulating Mathematics environment in the classroom. Participants shared their own successes in the use of materials in their classrooms, and discussed how hands-on materials support student learning.

    On Saturday, participants chose from a variety of practical and instructive workshop sessions, including:

    • Out Loud
    • How to Create Music That Will Meet Ministry Expectations
    • Building a Community of Learners
    • Communicating and Problem-Solving in Mathematics
    • Exploring Different Genres of Reading and Writing
    • Creating the Curious Classroom
    • Music on the Menu
    • Core Subject Testing in the Junior Grades
    • Guiding the Reading Process
    • Creating the Dynamic Classroom: From Vision to Practise
    • Storytelling and the Drama Connection

    Other events during the Conference:

    • Lots of tasty food
    • Opportunity to network with other Junior Educators from around the province

'Strategies for Improving Literacy Performance for the Junior Child'
    (a timely and relevant subject, as over 100 dedicated junior educators attended the sessions)
 
 
Keynote Speaker
Nancy Leonard, former consultant with the York Region Board
  • offered fun, practical teaching and learning strategies to support the struggling junior reader.
 
Three Store Front Sessions:
  • Nancy Leonard offered more enjoyable hands-on strategies for before, during and after reading activities.

  • Jody Major, a junior teacher from Thames Valley DSB, demonstrated how 'Literature Circles' can be a powerful learning tool: participants experienced an actual literature circle through small group discussion on a text.

  • Jamie McQuay, a Waterloo DSB teacher and last year's O.A.J.E. Education Recognition Award recipient, described the purpose and use of increasingly-popular graphic organizers to develop student understanding of a variety of texts. Participants received an assortment of graphic organizers to take away.
 
Feedback from participants was very positive.
